Oh come on

The Liberal Democrats aren’t really rocking at all at the news of three councillors lost in Bideford. What’s created the sudden loss of these three; it is there, “integrity and principal.”

The trio left after they found out one of their own worked as a stripper. Stripper isn’t exactly the most respectable job out their, but there’s a lot worse. But to leave the party in disgust is perhaps the clearest sign that they weren’t really liberals in the first place.

The Lib Dems do have a bit of a problem in attracting people who aren’t exactly presentable, this stripper and Opik are good examples of this. None the less they do deserve to be able to compete or ask to stand. If the party fails to properly vet those we put up it creates problems like those in Bideford.

But to find working with a stripper a problem to your “integrity and principal”, well …. come on.

I'd consider not supporting a politician because they are a strip-tease artiste to be *contrary* to liberal principles.

The Tory party has had arms dealers, convicted fraudsters and perjurors, not mention plenty of bigots and racists, in positions of power from council to cabinet.

The Labour party has it's share of sleaze, I'd far sooner have a Stripper, than ma certain MEP who represents her american clients rather than Lib Dem policy or constiuents interests when it comes to votes and campaigning in the EP.

Precisly it is un liberal to have a moral problem because someone is a stripper but we are a political party with a job to do.
A stripper could and should be able to stand for selection in a vote, but whether or not she should actually be selected is a different matter. It would be unlikely i would vote for a stripper in a selection process because i dont feel she would get us many votes. Which is essentailly what the lib dems are formed to do.
It is unfortunate that the public will and would sooner gove their votes to arms dealeers etc over strippers. Actually a stripper could win a vote, this one did, but given two equal candidates one who was a stripper one who wasnt.

Our job is to advance liberalism. It may be that a transsexual, gay or black candidate will get less votes. This is irrelevant.
If we start pandering to peoples prejudice then we have already lost the battle. Rather, we must advance liberal ideals from selection to election.

We can only further liberalism properly if we in goverment which we have to get votes for.
I also think theres a marked difference between transexuals gays and blacks and a stripper when it comes to theese matters. I dont think i was suggesting we shouldnt select black people, theres a marked differnce between a lifestyle choice and choice of occupation and the three demograhphics above.

There a aswell a lot of liberals who would ask if striptease actually benefical at all to promoting womans equality. The mark of liberal is to let the stripper live and let live. Which is why i think the rebels "principals and intergrity" argument is bull

The principle of not selecting a candidate just because the voters prejudices, which we do not endorse, is identical in the case of the transsexual and the stripper. The two are totally diffrent in every other regard, but your line of reasoning- dump them for votes- is equally applicable, and equally wrong.
Our job it to see as much of our policy platfor implemented as possible. I do not see how we can expect to introduce a more liberal attitude to sexual issues while remaning prudish in terms of our internal selections.
The issue isn't if it benefical, harmful or neutral in terms of womens equality; the issue it does it influnce the comptence of an individual as a councillor, and is it the place of organisations such as government of parties to judge this. The liberal answer is clearly no.
We will get nowhere if we do not practice what we preach!

I really dont see the two as the same. I also think you have to balance up the right of the stripper to be a coulcillor with the right of the lib dems to select their candidate.
I'm not saying a stripper shouldnt be a candidate at all but that i would less likely to vote for the stripper everything else being equal.
I think i have a right to be prudish and vote prudishly if i choose to.

precisly very true. And this really the whole point of blogging, to encourage the debate and awarness of subject and subjects etc etc rather than actually make the decsion which, im sure we both feel should be left to the voters.
sure announcing that im prudish will come back to bite me sometime.

Don't forgert Marina Baker, former Playboy model, who served as Chairman of the Lewes district council until she lost her seat this May, and for Parliament in the Brighton Kemptown in last GE in 2005.

But I think that it is refreshing that Lib Dems have few politicians like this, and aren't bound to old-fashioned moral standards like the Tories.

I have now had the chance to read a lot of the blog comments on this subject. The trouble is that virtually all the blogs make assumptions and base their opinion only on what they have read in the newspapers. Very unwise. Read one or two comments recently posted on the Libdem voice. You have all been duped. Just a stripper? All legal? I don't think so. Do you think that those who left had a fun time? Threatened and bullied into silence for several months until they left and too decent to speak out. Democracy at work -or a powerful party who cannot admit mistakes. And now the said stripper rakes it in from magazine and newspapers. She wasn't even a LibDem at the time of the election and the voters did not know any of it as has been claimed. Well I certainly didn't. If you want a Cllr who thinks its fine to sell her soiled pants then you are welcome to it.
